Steadfast Trip. (Info1)

Class Trip: Lets take our learning further.

This term we are looking at the environment and how we treat it.  As part of this programme we are able to go on the Steadfast.  What is the Steadfast?

The Steadfast was built and is owned by Laurence Etheridge and is based
at French Pass as a charter vessel.  She is a replica of a famous 1913
gaff-rigged pilot cutter called the Jolie Brise, which is still sailing and
based in England.   The Jolie Brise won the Fastnet Race three times,
including the first race in 1925.  The Fastnet is still raced annually.

Being of an early 20th century design “Steadfast” she has few modern
contrivances, but she does have an engine and GPS (so we won’t get lost!)
and a loo!  All sails are manually hauled aloft, the wheel works with block
and tackles, the anchor winch is hand cranked.  She has been fully surveyed
under the NZ Safe Ship Management, and is fully certified for charter use.

Obviously we want you to have a good time while on board, so here are a few points to help you know what to expect.

We will have a range of duties for you to do while on board, these range from helping to steer the boat, to helping haul in the sails, to taking soundings (measuring the depth), identifying seabirds and other wildlife, taking plankton and bottom samples, measuring the speed using a old style ships log and navigating.  You will be shown what to do and there will be adults available to help out if needed.  It will not be all fast-paced action however.  Sailing is about doing a good job more than doing a quick job!  Take pride in what you do, and do it well!  We swap duties every 20 minutes, so you won't get bored!

When:             Friday 7th June  9am-2.30pm
Where:           Nelson Port

Whaea Aroha
