Deforestation is when people clear big areas of forest to use the land for other things like farming and building houses or shops. What is sad about this is that the trees will never be re-planted.
One of the effects of deforestation is the soil damage - it's not protected from the sun and ends up getting washed away.
Also the water cycle is broken, some amazing plants, birds and animals die off because they have nowhere to live.
A very important thing is that if we don't have enough plants to take out the CO2 in the air, we won't have oxygen and clean air to breath.
